Yet Again, Still No Power

Day four has now arrived. It got really cold last night. Too bad we don't have an alternative heat source we can safely leave on all night. We still have all the blankets on the bed so we were okay. It's warming up today. It's supposed to be above freezing and it's sunny now. The ice on the rooves is already melting. And it feels warm in the family room with the sun coming in the windows. We have 53 in here now and it feels warm! Tomorrow it's supposed to be in the 40s so we might be able to get the van up the hill.

Again , Still No Power

No overnight miracles got our power on. We did get the family room up to 55 last night with the propane heater. It was nice in there! We shut the generator and propane down for the night and bundled up to sleep. We have all of our blankets on the bed so we were okay. It was back to 43 inside this morning. The power company has been putting restoration news on their website . This morning it said they were finished with the substations and critical systems like water treatment and said:
Clark County – Donaldson, Hwy. 60, Goshen Road, Sewell Shop, Old Ruckerville, Hwy. 89, White-Conkwright, Stoner-Ephesus, Flanagan Station, Two Mile/Cole Road area

We're between Donaldson and Sewell Shop so maybe soon!

This morning after I walked down to the van to go to work. We got another 2-3 inches of snow last night. The ice coated trees didn't need the extra weight.

Our road this morning on the way in to Lexington. It took longer than usual to get to work .

This is the driveway to IBM this morning and the Frisbee golf course. No one was playing Frisbee golf.

Another icy tree and the walkway to the office from the parking lot. Nice that they cleared and salted it.

Still No Power

Another night and day without power. It was 22 outside and 42 inside this morning. I took most of the day off today to get emergency supplies. It took a while but I finally found a generator at Home Depot in Lexington. They had about 20 pallets of them and were unloading them off the truck while I was there. They were flying out the door, to say the least. I haven't heard much news except for the news talk radio and they say over a million people in several states are affected by the storm. I got Lisa hooked up with the generator and a propane space heater. The space heater says it is safe for indoor use so hopefully it will be okay. It was already warming up in there when I left. I came in to Lexington to put in a few hours work. I'll be able to get a full day in tomorrow, but not from home :( One good thing I'll have is a shower. There's an old locker room in the basement from when this used to be a manufacturing plant. As far as I know it still works. I smell bad and haven't shaved since Tuesday. We're doing okay and we should make it through. We are supposed to get a thaw on Sunday. That will be nice because walking up and down the driveway isn't fun. I still have to park the van down there because there is about two to three inches of ice on the driveway. The neighbor man down the road saw me struggling with the 200+ pound generator and came over with his tractor and took it up the hill for us. His name is Nelson and he's my new best friend! I have to go to work now. I'll post again tomorrow with news.

No Power

I'm using up the last of my batteries to post this. The power has been out since last night and there is no word on how long it will be out. There are over 400,000 people without power from the ice storm. It's getting chilly in the house now and we'll have to leave tomorrow if it doesn't come back on. I'll post later to let you know how it's going.

Ice Storm

We got to experience a good old Kentucky ice storm today. The meteorologists explained that freezing rain happens when warm moist air flows over the top of the cold air at the surface. The moisture falls as rain and freezes when it hits the ground. If it was cold aloft then it would fall as snow. We had about 4" of snow over night but it has been compressed by the ice. It was a good day to stay home. We had to go to Winchester this morning because Lisa had a doctor's appointment that she really couldn't reschedule. It really wasn't as bad earlier, the ice layer was fairly thin and it was still on top of the snow. The cars just crushed the ice out of the way. On the way back it had been raining so the ice was thicker and the snow was compressed.

We couldn't get the van back up the driveway so we had to leave it down by the creek and walk up the driveway. Walking up the hill on ice was not fun or easy.

See the shiny snow? I didn't know Lisa's camera had night vision. I looked out the window and there were icicles sticking UP from the ground! I had to get the picture. Can you guess what caused them?

We couldn't get across the yard because the ice was so slick so we dumped some hay over the fence to keep the horses going. I'm going to start looking at ice spikes for my boots. Any advice Andy?

They were just covered in ice.

Happy Birthday Dad!

Today is Dad's birthday. We all hope you have a great day, Dad! Cathryn and Haley went back to Jay today. She'll be going back to work at the post office this week. No more fighting for this soldier. Just don't get called back up!! Heidi is doing okay. The knot on her leg is smaller and her cuts look better. She's eating okay and it looks like she is moving well.

Cathryn saying goodbye. Lenny didn't waste any time taking back the bed.

Three finch eggs in this nest and one in the other. The proud daddy finch.

I put up a shelf over the coat rack.
We needed someplace to put caps and gloves.

The girls kept coming out to see what I was doing in the mudroom.

Ice Horse

We had quite a scare today. We went for a walk outside of the fence to the west of our property. Cathryn wanted to look at it since she's in the market to buy property. We were coming back up the hill and the horses saw us close to the fence. Bahloo came over to the fence by way of the dam but Heidi decided to take a shortcut across the ice on the pond. She almost made it across but started to slip. When she slipped she kicked out to steady herself and broke through the ice. Her back legs went in up to her rump. She tried to pull herself out but then the ice broke under her front and she was able to jump out once she had all four feet on the bottom. She has some cuts and scrapes and bruises. She was all wet and cold too. Not to mention the dirty pond mud all the way up her legs. Lisa got the sweat scraper and started drying her right away. We got towels and a quilt to put over her to warm her up. The water froze on her mane and tail. After Lisa got most of the water off the sun came out and we moved her out into the sun. Her black hair absorbs the heat and Lisa walked her around and gave her some sweet feed. She called the vet and he said to get her a tetanus booster on Monday and as long as she's moving normally she should be okay. We'll watch for swelling and infection of course. She put some antibiotic ointment in the cuts to help clean them.

Lenny likes this place now. The debris all over the floor is from the birds. They are quite messy.

It was nice and warm yesterday. But not so today. It got up to around 32 I think. Lisa re-stacked the feed. Piper watched and I took pictures.

We were headed over to the west property.

Heidi posed for a picture. The view from the property.

Bahloo coming to see us. Lisa warming Heidi.

Cathryn and her giant horse.

Heidi's ice hole. The ice was only a couple of inches thick. I'm surprised she made it as far as she did.
