Birds and Calves

The April heatwave is here. I know most of the country is feeling it too. We are at 85 this afternoon and the air is still. We got a few things done but we'll have to get used to the heat again. One of Mr. Reese's cows had a calf yesterday. We got to see the whole thing. I don't think I'll be able to un-see that. Be happy that I didn't post the more gruesome picture. You know, the ones that even the Discovery Channel wouldn't post.

Rainbows

We went down to Richmond yesterday afternoon. The Tractor Supply there had one of the Kid Panels to complete the sheep enclosure. We ate dinner at Sonny's while we were there. It had been raining all weekend and started to break up yesterday. We were driving up through Boonesborough with the sun behind and to the left. It made some great rainbows. It was still cold today and rainy off and on. We are supposed to be up in the 80's this weekend.

Chocolate Festival

Lisa went to Maysville to the Chocolate Festival. She brought me a piece of fudge. I couldn't go because I was on-call.

Tulips in Maysville.

A screen of bamboo. I think it's a woodchuck. Like a beaver but no flat tail. Muskrat?

Purple Magnolia.

There was a statuary along the way to Maysville. I want the giant chicken. It was over 7 feet tall!

Car in the Barn

I got the garage/hay barn straightened up so a car will fit in there. Dad can park his Prius in there when they come up next month. I wore long sleeves because I haven't forgotten about the hay rash. I must have an allergy to something in the yellow hay because the green doesn't give me the rash. Sorry about the white legs, it's been a long winter.

Planted

We got most of the garden planted. There are collards, onions, broccoli,Brussels Sprouts and spinach. We still have corn, beans and lettuce. We'll have to find room for tomatoes too, we were being a little generous with the row spacing. We put up the boards in the blocks to keep the girls out. They can jump right over but they don't. They had to come out and bark at me while I took pictures.

Rock

The erosion has been eating away at our driveway. We had another bad storm this past weekend and finally had to get some new gravel. It was still high in the middle because he spread an even amount all the way across. It filled in the new holes but I'll have to knock down the middle with the grader.

Mini Show

We went to Shelbyville, KY today to see the miniature horse sale. We didn't buy any but there were some nice ones there.

It was at the fairgrounds. Piper got to go with us of course.

They were really small.

Some of them had babies.

They were trying to sell this mare and her baby together.

We came back through Frankfort. Piper posed in front of the Capital Building.

Herding Baby Cattle

Mr. Reese's new calf spent the day in our front pasture on Thursday. It was born on Tuesday and got through the wire somehow. Lisa went down to help herd it back to its mommy.

Feed My Sheep

Andy and Lynne left yesterday morning. It was nice having them here. Lisa has been having a good time with Andy around. She's been getting to know him again which is great.

Andy hooked up the solar charger for the shock wire that goes around the bottom of the sheep pasture. Maria, the sheep's veterinarian, came out to trim their hooves and castrate Larry and Larry.

I got to hold Lucia while Lisa and Maria worked on the Larrys. She had a device that held a band of surgical tubing. It ratcheted the tubing tight and then crimped a clamp to keep it tight. She didn't want to cut them because of their size and fear of infection. As we know now, sheepies aren't especially known for their cleanliness.

Lisa was showing the sheep how to go over the steep hillside to their new pasture. Their footsteps strayed a little when they found the dandelions. Dandelions were a lot more interesting than the food in Lisa's scoop.

I think we did pretty well leading the lambkins to their new residence.

The sheep habitat. It is very important to keep your captive animals happy. We ran out of time so I just threw the plywood up on the shed to give them a wind break for the cold weather and snow that is supposed to be coming tomorrow and Tuesday. I'll square it up and frame it out when the weather gets better.

Tractor Supply is still out of the 10 foot sections of the kid pen. We have it set up in a triangle. It's a little cramped in there but it makes it quite a bit easier to wrangle them.

If a Tree Falls in the Pasture...

Andy, Lynne and Lisa went to Lexington today to go shopping. I didn't get to go because I had to work. I worked in Lexington the last two days. We had six server builds I needed to complete. When they got back Andy cut down the old ugly broken tree in the back. It was actually in the adjoining property but it was right on the fence line and it's the one that dropped the big piece on our fence. It was time for it to go. The view out my office window is much nicer now.

He threw a rope around the top. Lisa and Lynne are down the hill pulling on it. He cut the hnging branch off first.

He cut a big notch in the direction he wanted it to fall. The girls barked.
