It's Nice Out

The weather has been wonderful the last couple of days. It was in the 50's this morning and now it's 72. I took a picture of the thermometer because I didn't think our FL and AZ fans would believe it. The porch guys haven't worked on the porch anymore but Lisa got it swept off and put out chairs and plants. I ate my lunch out there yesterday. It might be too breezy and cool out today though. We'll see.

Porch Day 6 and 7

The guys were here yesterday and today to work on the porch. It was pouring down rain yesterday afternoon so I didn't get any pictures. I think they are doing a great job. We've been discussing how we are going to finish it. We are leaning toward painting the railing and upper posts white along with the visible deck stringer. We'll probably use a clear sealer for the deck leaving natural wood color.

They said they were done with everything that has railing and we could go ahead and start using it. I think they had an idea we had already been out there.

Porch Day 5

They got the roof up. As you can see they still need to put on the shingles and the ceiling. It will be nice having it finished.

Days 3 and 4

The pictures on the left are yesterday the ones on the right are today. It's coming along nicely. They put concrete in the post holes today. It's very sturdy.

Porch - Day 2

It's actually day 3 but they didn't work today. This is after the first day of construction. We had to take down the fence so we put up the orange mesh. Arizona likes to chew on the twine that holds it up.

We would like to put these steps over in the pasture with Heidi. When she's ready to ride they'd make a good mounting block. Although it's hollow it is still quite heavy. I leaned on it and couldn't get it to budge. If we cant find someone with a loader we'll be using a sledge hammer and wheel barrow to move it.

The plan. It's going to be an awesome porch!

Porch - Day 1

David Hunt brought a load of materials over for the porch yesterday. Andy and I took the fence down Saturday so they would have room to work. His big trailer didn't make it as far as he had hoped but it will have to do. Arizona got her halter. She prefers to be naked.

After the Rain

It was rainy most of the morning. The sun didn't come out for long but it did stop raining. Arizona was doing her cute act. I was working from home today. I've been in Lexington a lot lately building servers.

Three Weeks Old

Arizona is now three weeks old. She has come a long way. She let Andy and me scratch her today. She seems sure of herself and is quite curious. We had left the garage (hay barn) doors open and when I looked out she was in there poking around. Sundown doesn't like going in there. Her hair is soft, not like horse hair, it feels as fuzzy has it looks. She's dirty from rolling but I don't think she's ready for having the hose turned on her. She's drinking from a bucket now. She's sticking her face in the water anyway, she may be drinking. Since horses don't lap water like a dog it's hard to tell if anything is going in. If Arizona were a giant horse, like some we know, then you could see the vortex created by the massive sucking force. Her dainty little lips just make little ripples.

Lisa was cleaning the carpet in the front room so all the furniture was piled in the family room. Lenny saw this as an opportunity.

Grooming Arizona

Arizona loves it when Lisa brushes her. She's getting big and strong too. She looks so cuddly but really isn't. I haven't touched her yet. Andy got a hand on her but not long. She's getting there.

The garden is coming along nicely too. The corn is coming up on the right and the big bushy greens are Brussels sprouts. We heard the greens are good to eat and you're supposed to prune them off anyway. We'll let you know. The smaller plants on the right are bush beans and behind them are the black-eyed peas. On the left from right to left are onions, broccoli, collards and lettuce. There are cucumbers and tomatoes in there too.

Four Wheeler

Andy brought his four wheeler down with him this time. He's going to leave it here until he gets a place to keep it. It will be put to good use. He dragged the dead branch from Heidi's pasture down to the burn pile.

We also devised a drag harrow to try and smooth out the driveway. It worked pretty well, it just needed to be a little wider.
