Cull Ewe

A "cull ewe" is one that is no longer a productive member of the flock. Edith had one this season. It had trouble last year and this time she rejected both of her lambs. Edith was happy to find out we all like mutton. She didn't like just putting them down and sending them to the rendering factory.

Andy and Lisa went over to Edith's to pick her up on Friday.

Anne was originally going to take her but she took Shemp instead. Andy will put this one in the freezer in a few weeks. He wanted to let her udders dry up and wait for the hormones to relax first. Lisa calls her "Spot".

The grass has grown so much the cattle forgot to come get their grain yesterday. They remembered it today.

We worked on the hen house today. We fixed the falling ceiling and put in new perches. Lisa is cutting the foam insulation for the ceiling.

The weather was nice again today. It was cooler than it has been, around 60.

We had to make room for all the new hens. I'm sure the old hens don't understand that the concept of "cull ewe" can apply to chickens. "Cull hens" can be chicken and dumplings, chicken pot pie, fried chicken, or pulled chicken.

Three long perches. After dark tonight we went out and caught all the young hens and put them in the hen house. We'll leave everyone closed in the coop until they get used to it being home.

 Paige.
